 <title>Himalayan Fairs- Nanda Devi Fair</title>
 <link>http://www.himadventures.net/outdoor_forums/node/322</link>
<description>Nanda Devi fair is held at many places in the state of Uttarakhand, like, Almora, Nainital, Kot, Ranikhet, Bhowali, Kichha, and on many villages like Lohar and in valleys of Pindar. This fair was first started in the Kumaon region, during the time of Kalyan Chand, back in the 16th century. This fair is very important and gets visitors from far away places. Nanda Devi fair is also important from a commercial and historical point of view as well.
The Nanda Devi fair is dedicated to the Goddesses Nanda and Sunanda. This festival is of very high religious importance. The term &amp;#039;Nanda&amp;#039; in literal sense means prosperity and well being. This fair is symbolic of the prosperity of the whole region.
During the festival, the place is filled with tourists and it becomes a hub of activity. One can buy a lot of hand made products prepared by the village craftsmen here. Many artists come and perform here during the fair as well. It is a very good chance for them to show the folk traditions of the place. It is celebrated during the month of September.

 <title>Places to Visit in Varanasi</title>
 <link>http://www.himadventures.net/outdoor_forums/node/321</link>
<description>Being the oldest city of the world and an important Hindu pilgrimage center, Varanasi attracts a large number of people from all over the world. For centuries, Varanasi is famous for spiritualism, mysticism, Indian philosophy and Hinduism. All these are reflected in numerous sects, temples, Ashrams and Ghats. Varanasi is associated not only with Hinduism but also with Buddhism and Jainism. Besides numerous temples, Varanasi also boasts of Buddhist Stupas and Jain temples. Varanasi is also a mirror of the age-old Indian civilization. The archaeological museum at Sarnath houses numerous remains of the past, including the National emblem of India, the Ashoka pillar.
Since Varanasi is mainly associated with Hinduism, temples form the main attraction. The Ganga Ghats (river fronts) are the main center of religious activities and rituals and also form one of the main attractions of Varanasi. The Alamgir Mosque, blend of the Hindu and Mughal styles of the architecture, is another important attraction of Varanasi. Some of the most important temples of Varanasi are Durga temple, Vishwanath temple, Sankat Mochan temple, Tulsi Manas temple and the Bharat Mata temple. The Bharat Mata Temple houses a huge relief map of the whole of Indian subcontinent and Tibetan plateau. Other attractions of Varanasi are the Benaras Hindu University (BHU), the Archaeological Museum, Sarnath, Bharat Kala Bhavan and the Buddhist Stupas and temples at Sarnath.

 <title>Wildlife park in Bangalore </title>
 <link>http://www.himadventures.net/outdoor_forums/node/320</link>
 <description>Bangalore Bannerghatta National Park

Bannerghatta National Park hours are 9am to 5pm. Avoid the Sunday rush or go to the zoo early around 9.30am. Avoid hours after 3pm - you probably won&amp;#039;t have enough time to see everything you might like to see. Best visited when less crowded. Eat full breakfast before start your trip. If you&amp;#039;re ok with junk food...plenty is available at this site. Carry bottled water.
The cost of the tickets vary from Rs.35 to Rs.100 depending on the day and type of visit - weekends are higher by approx. Rs. 10-25 for the visits. The combinations include Zoo visit, Tiger+Lion Safar, Grand Safari (most popular) etc. Expats/Non-Indians pay twice the ruppees as would an Indian. Camera fee is Rs. 20 and Video Camera is Rs. 110 (you may not want to do this). There is butterfly conservatory near the zoo (2 mins walking distance). The cost of the ticket is Rs. 20 in addition to the zoo fees
Do the safari tour first, then visit the zoo. Animals most commonly spotted during the safari are deer, bear, bison (not staged); tigers (staged/caged). Bus windows have grills (criss/cross wired), for safety reasons, which would obstruct the view for taking photographs and video shooting. Zoo has a variety animals but is not nearly as classy as one would seen in Australia, United States, Canada, etc.
Tipping guys on the safari bus - not required/neccessary.If you visited Gir National Forest, a trip to this national park could be redundant. If this is your only national park tour, it&amp;#039;s worth a visit.

<title>remote Himalayan areas are heaven for drugs.</title>
 <link>http://www.himadventures.net/outdoor_forums/node/317</link>
<description>More than 10 panchayats in interior areas of &amp;amp;ldquo;inner and outer Seraj&amp;amp;rdquo; have emerged as a remote haven for opium and cannabis smugglers, who have developed a socially acceptable organised network in these areas.
From Jadingcha in Lug valley to Khanag-Jadang areas in Ani subdivision, poor villagers remain mute witnesses to their political maters&amp;amp;rsquo; &amp;amp;ldquo;blame game&amp;amp;rdquo; on the issue of development.
They continue to live in abject poverty in these isolated pockets.

Above is a news clippings from a famous paper. I am sure people had not forgotton that few years back MALANA was popular for drugs which was sponsored by politicians+ Western Tourists+ Police nexus.
Some effect came when whole business was blasted by news media and whole world saw what is going on in Parvati Valley.

 <title>Latest Weather Report- March 9th 2009</title>
 <link>http://www.himadventures.net/outdoor_forums/node/305</link>
<description>A fresh spell of snow in the higher reaches of the state along with hailstorms and heavy rain in the mid hill and lower areas have revived wintry conditions in the region.
The mercury plummeted to freezing point in Keylong, the district headquarters of tribal Lahaul-Spiti, which recorded 10 cm of fresh snowfall over the last 24 hours. Kalpa in Kinnaur also reeled under extreme cold as minimum temperature touching 0.8 degree Celsius.
The upper areas of Shimla district also came in the grip of cold following heavy snow on the Hatu peak and the Chanshal slopes. Narkanda also had 10 cm of snowfall overnight, which melted away.
Shimla and surrounding areas were lashed by hailstorm this afternoon, which brought down a sharp fall in the mercury. In all 20 mm of rainfall was recorded. Sunderanagar recorded 9 mm, Dharamsala 5 mm and Una 1.2 mm of rainfall.
The rain is considered beneficial for the apple crop in the mid hill areas where bud-breaking had been delayed due to lack of moisture in soil in the wake of prolonged dry spell. However, in the lower hills where flowering had started fruit setting will be affected.
The stone fruit crop had been damaged in parts of Shimla and Solan districts, which were lashed by hailstorm twice over the past three days.
The Met office has predicted more rain in lower hills and snow in higher hills over the next 24 hours.
Kangra: Kangra valley today again shivered with cold after the people enjoyed a sunny day yesterday.
The life here was left out of gear as the valley received incessant rains since morning accompanied with lightening and thunders leaving most of the people indoors. The Dhauladhar ranges and the lower foothills too received heavy snowfall resulting in cold wave like conditions in the valley forcing people to light bonfire by the roadsides.
Agriculture experts said the rains and the low temperature would adversely affect the wheat and mustard crops.
The industrial area in the town remained waterlogged due to the rains leaving the people visiting the complaint office of the HPSEB and the SDO office of the BSNL in a lurch.
Some of the owners of the industries alleged that there was no outlet to the accumulated water from the industrial area. The water had accumulated on the entry road of the industrial area, which houses some state and central government offices.
CHAMBA: The high mountains, including the passes of Saach, Chehni, Chobia, Kugti and Jalsu and the famous Manimahesh Lake in Chamba district have been experiencing heavy snowfall since Wednesday morning.
Dain Kund, the high altitude peak of Dalhousie hills at a height of about 2,900 m received a light spell of snow, reports informed.
The low-lying areas of the district had been receiving widespread downpour accompanied by thunderstorm, the reports further said.
Consequently, the transportation services had been disrupted following landslip at different places due to heavy downpour on the Chamba-Nayagran highway.

<title>Tibetan Human Rights Activist found murdered.</title>
 <link>http://www.himadventures.net/outdoor_forums/node/235</link>
<description>The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD) said here today that a Tibetan monk was beaten to death in Sichuan province in Tibet plateau.
Quoting information received by it, TCHRD spokesperson Tenzin Norgay said a monk, Phuntsok (27) of Drango Monastery, who hailed from Zongpa village, Drango County, Kardze TAP (Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture), was beaten to death by the Chinese Public Security Bureau (PSB) personnel.
He said it was on March 25 when Phuntsok pasted leaflets on the walls of a branch office of the Drango PSB headquarters on Shara Thang-do Bridge and on roadside trees. His campaign was connected with the last years unprecedented unrest in Tibet, particularly in Drango County, when hundreds of monks who took part in a peaceful demonstration against the Chinese government on March 25, 2008. The protest was subsequently quelled down with force and resulted in arrests, torture and detention of hundreds of monks.
However, while pasting leaflets on the walls of an automobile service centre in Drango County, he was detected by PSB personnel who came straight to arrest him. Sensing it he fled on a motorbike. The PSB forces pursued him. He was arrested and severely beaten with batons and died.
In an attempt to conceal the incident, the PSB personnel dropped his corpse on the base of a hill. A day later, local Tibetans learnt about his death and found body lying at the bottom of a hill and cremated it. The Chinese authorities adamantly maintained that Phuntsok died after committing suicide while the local Tibetans were not convinced. The TCHRD claimed that there were bruises and cuts on his body, which clearly indicated that the Chinese security police beat him to death.
