Tribal Regions - Bastar

This Divine Land of Bastar is enriched with natural beauty which makes it a paradise for tourists.
The deep forest area between bushes and bamboos where one always feel the absence of sunlight, wide and thick forests, between high mountains cool flowing streams, sky-touching mountains, caves, high waterfalls and in the valleys the spread of greenary and in between this the huts made by bamboo sticks, the fearless life style of the tribals and their culture would fill one's heart and mind with new wonders and pleasure.

Places of Interest

There are so many places which are worth seeing, not only in Bastar district, but also in the neighbouring districts of Dantewada and Kanker, which are in Bastar division. It has been rightly said that there are many places of worth seeing which are still unexplored and Bastar will surely imprint an unerasable memory in the mind of a tourists.

The important tourist places in Bastar district are Chitrakot and Tiratgarh (both are water falls), Kotamsar and Kailash caves, Kanger Valley National Park etc. Indravati National Park, known for tigers and wild buffaloes is situated at a distance of 200 Kms, west of Jagdalpur, is another place of worth seeing. There is another tourist spot known as Kurschel Valley, with its gigantics trees, situated at 40 Kms. north west of Narainpur. There are two wild life sanctuaries Bhairamgarh and Pamed which are in Dantewada district. The famous historical temple of Goddess Danteshwari is situated in Dantewada.Another place of historical interest in Dantewada district is Barsur.

To feel the complete joy of the tourism, Bastar is the right choice to explore the natural beauty. Bastar is an adventurer�s delight and a nature lover�s paradise. You can pick from national parks, caves, waterfalls, palaces, museums and places of religious importance. The palace and the nearby cultural sites mainly the Bhoramdeo temple complex is well known. Nagarnar is famous for its terracotta crafts and Narayanpur is known for its bell metal, woodcraft, wrought iron and bamboo artifacts. The Ramakrisna Mission centre here, has people involved in welfare activities for the tribals. The anthropological museum on the route to Chitrakoot waterfalls, gives valuable insight into tribal history and culture.

 All the forests in the region abound in rare species of birds, reptiles and other larger primates. An interpretation centre at Kutumsar, 32 Km from Jagdalpur, imparts knowledge to visitors about the wild life and forests. Nature trails are also a unique way of learning from sights and sounds of the forests.

Bastar is a tiny spot on the Indian map that yet has been unexplored. The adjoining dense forests, tribal people, their age-old art forms and Arcadian lifestyle lend it a unique rustic charm. Sage Valmiki in his �Ramayana� described this forest region with its lush greenery, innumerable waterfalls and caves as �Dandakaranya�, through which Lord Rama is said to have passed. A few days in the tribal country, swigging Mahua, dancing with the tribals and meandering at the �haat� (weekly market) will take your journey to the bygone era where mobile phones, TV, Internet and even electricity seemed right out of science fiction.

A lot had been said and printed about BASTAR and specially in Indian movies. But I do not think this region is tourist friendly yet.
